We’re On a Boat
What a nice, relaxing day! This morning I woke everyone up at around 7. I thought that the sun would wake up mostly everyone, but it was unfortunately cloudy. Not to worry. It was nice on the boat. So anyway, today our schedule was completely dependent on the wind. Jerry and Gaza prepared a delicious breakfast, and then Josephine, Mia, Jandro, Michael, Galen, and I took down the tents we slept in. A couple people snorkeled around the island, which had some beautiful snorkeling. Around 9:30, we set sail, and left our tiny, windy, isolated island.
The day on the boat consisted of listening and singing along to music, writing journals, and napping on the top of the boat. Sarah made sure to wear a lot of sunscreen today, and luckily she did not get burnt! We stopped to go snorkeling, and saw some amazing coral and fish. Next was more sailing and lots of fun singing songs containing the word ‘sail’. Caleb tried his hand at fishing, and had great luck. He felt a tug, and everyone got excited! We all cheered Caleb on as Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody played in the background. Finally the fish was revealed. Much to all of our surprise, it was a 4 foot Great Barracuda! He also caught a Spanish Mackerole. The boat stopped near an island, and we ate sandwiches. Mia, Galen, Josephine, and Nathalie went out for a quick swim again.
We set sail again, and got to Tobacco Caye, our home for the next 2 days. It is less windy here, and about 10 times bigger than Rendevous Island. Also, there are other people on the island! No more yelling ‘glum free’ at the top of our lungs. We set up our tents in the camp area, Robbie making sure that no one pitched a tent underneath a coconut tree! Two of the tents did not have rain covers (flyes), and that created a fun challenge. It was decided that Jandro, Caleb, and Robbie would put their tents underneath one single tarp. Hopefully the heat will find a way to escape! The group sat around in our Creek Chairs, finishing journals and joking around unclipping each others’ chairs. We took a tour of the island, which only took around 10 minutes, mainly because Nathalie stopped and (once again) made friends with a couple of friendly, young boys. Nathalie, Josephine, Sammie, Mia, Chelsea, and I had some fun dancing with some other locals. Sammie lead a very short yoga session for Josephine, Chelsea, and me.
Dinner was the Barracuda caught earlier in the day, mac-and-cheese, stir fried vegetables, and potatoes. It was another delicious dinner, decidedly one of the best meals we have had on this trip! After dinner, the group had a lot of fun playing around, and making a human pyramid. Caleb, Michael, Robbie and Cooper were the unfortunate ones to be on the bottom of the giant pyramid! Slowly, everyone drifted back to the tents to get some sleep. One thing we found with camping is that there is much less to do once the sun goes down. Tobacco Caye seems like it’s going to be a lot of fun, and we are all really excited! We are experiencing the Belizean nature in its best!
