Meet the Instructors

Meet Jane and Raúl, the instructors that will be leading this amazing Broadreach program this summer! With their breadth of expertise and dedication to helping students discover the world and their place in it, they are thrilled to embark on this journey and summer of unforgettable experiences.

JANE MCPHEE-FREW
Jane grew up in the countryside of Australia, but moved to the city to attend the University of Sydney, where she discovered her passion was biology and natural science. She received a Bachelor of Science in biology from the University of Sydney, a Master of Applied Science in wildlife health and population management from the University of Sydney and is working towards a Master of Antarctic Science from the University of Tasmania. Following her degrees, she was able to indulge in her second passion – travel! She has been to all seven continents and has a vast amount of field experience in ecosystems around the world, including volunteering at Goukamma Nature Reserve on the Western Cape of South Africa and conducting flora and fauna surveys in the Australian Outback. In her previous role as a project leader for International Student Volunteers, she taught field-based conservation biology to groups of college volunteers from around the world. Jane has also led educational outdoor programs in Mexico, Australia, Cambodia, the Bahamas and the Caribbean. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, sea kayaking, snorkeling and horseback riding. She loves experiencing new places, environments and cultures, and is thrilled to join Broadreach for her third summer to lead the Fiji Shark Behavior & Conservation program.

RAUL GROSS
Raúl hails from Indiana but has worked and studied all over the world. As an undergraduate student at the University of Evansville, Raúl studied abroad in Spain, Australia and England. Following his study abroad adventures, Raúl volunteered at a small orphanage in Honduras for two years. That experience led him to seek out new experiences in Latin America including leading summer programs in Nicaragua, Perú, Ecuador and Costa Rica, as well as Broadreach’s Advanced Scuba program in the Yucatan and our Bahamas Marine Biology program. Raúl spends most of the year in Colorado, where he has taught ski lessons since 2010. In the off season, you can find him trail running or mountain biking in Moab, Utah. Raúl speaks fluent Spanish, conversational Portuguese, basic French and is eager to learn sign language to better communicate while diving. He is excited to meet his students, explore new places and learn together this summer on the Fiji Shark Behavior & Conservation program.
