Map
What is Peru? Peru is hiking the Ancient Inca Trail to perhaps the world’s best known archaeological wonder (hint, its initial are M.P.) Peru is llamas and alpacas. Peru is learning Spanish in the Sacred Valley and picking up a few words in Quechua, a language spoken by Incan descendants. Peru is taking in the energy of Cusco, then releasing all of your energy into service projects in the Cordillera Negra. Peru is modern and ancient, peaks and valleys, and yours to discover.
We fly into Cusco, a World Heritage Site littered with colorful people, museums, ruins, and colonial buildings built on top of stone laid by the Inca. Cusco is also the gateway to you guessed it, Machu Picchu — Peru’s jewel in the clouds. This incredible high-altitude city, inhabited by the Incas in the 15th century, wasn’t discovered until 1911. Despite what you might have read, no travel guide can prepare you for the first time you see it. It’s an experience that’s all yours.
“Utterly life-changing; the hike, the service, days studying in the Sacred Valley… one huge amazing time with great people!” — Ellen Watlington, La Mesa, CA
See how easy it is to get carried away with Machu Picchu? Let’s not forget that we study Spanish in the Sacred Valley town of Pisac, make our way to Puerto Maldonado and cruise up the Amazon River to the Picaflor field station. At last, a few days of R&R at an eco-lodge on the Madre de Dios River.
