Belize Wilderness Emergency Medicine

Map

This shape-shifting country is different for all those who visit. For you, it’s one giant medical training facility that just happens to be home to the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, coral atolls, jungles filled with slinky jaguars, and more. Starting off in Belize City, we’ve created a unique map of this Central American jewel designed to take you to locations that dovetail with, and highlight your medical training. Real world context is everything.

Before the 72-hour intensive training begins though, we make our way inland, past the capital city of Belmopan and into the Cayo district — one of Belize’s six official districts. The rugged, mountainous Cayo is scruffy to say the least. Here, English-speaking Belize turns to Spanish, Creole turns Mayan and coral reefs turn to caves and waterfalls. This is the place to hike in lush rainforest, explore Mayan ruins and head into caves, which is exactly what we do.

“She liked the different locations, the process of getting her wilderness certificate, and all the changing aspects of the trip! ” — Mary Lee Williams, Lebanon, IL

The Cockscomb Wildlife Sanctuary in central Belize is the perfect escape after spending dealing with head wounds, tying off splints and carrying people on stretchers. Last stop is a public health experience in San Ignacio, trading our practice scenarios for real world ones.
