COURSE DESCRIPTION
There is no better way to learn a foreign language than to live and work amongst people who only speak that language. We invite students to experience Spanish through Ecuador – its rich history, beautiful topography, vibrant cultural centers and gracious people – on a 33-day journey that will have students fully immersed in the lifestyles and language of the Ecuadorian people. As with all Insights courses, Immersion Ecuador is divided into four phases that build upon a common theme, in this case learning the Spanish language (see course format). Throughout the phases, language skills are developed through intensive cultural immersion that includes home stays and formal instruction, adventure, service learning and personal reflection.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
- This course is designed to focus on achieving a functional level of conversational Spanish sufficient for independent living in a Spanish speaking country.
- The secondary objectives include; increased cultural awareness, development of leadership and teamwork skills, and increased self-confidence.
- Grammar and vocabulary lessons are weaved throughout a course outline that explores the culture and history of the country of Ecuador.
- Students will explore these topics through reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities.

- Ecuador, its culture, and its socio-economic and political state
- Global panorama of current politics
- Ecuador’s cultural environment – recreation and sports
- Cuenca – customs, traditions of the region
- History of Quechua
- History of the Incas
FIELD STUDIES & EXERCISES
- In addition to vocabulary class time, the students are engaged in conversation with the merchants and other locals as the class travels through the countryside.
