From Student to Dive Instructor: Summer’s Broadreach Story

By: Summer, Broadreach HQ High School Adventures, Middle School, Pro Dive, Parents, Scuba

For the past two years, Summer has taught young Broadreach divers how to gain confidence and skills underwater while exploring the deep blue Caribbean ocean. But before that, she started out as a student herself, spending several summers on Broadreach programs. She shares her story on how her experience as a student shaped her journey toward becoming a certified dive instructor and returning to teach at Broadreach.

How did you first learn about Broadreach?

My parents were actually both Broadreach instructors back in their 20s, so I grew up hearing about their experiences. Because of that, I always knew I wanted to go on a Broadreach trip myself one day!

What was your experience like as a Broadreach student?

I had such an amazing experience as a student! I was pretty shy growing up, and going on Broadreach trips really pushed me outside my comfort zone in the best way. One thing that stood out to me was how much my instructors got to know me, both as a person and as a diver. They paid attention to the little things I could improve on and helped me build my skills and confidence in the water. Looking back, those small things made such a big difference in the diver I became.

Why did you return to Broadreach to complete our PADI Scuba Instructor (IDC) course?

I knew I wanted to be an instructor and Broadreach was familiar, so it felt like an obvious choice for me to continue my learning once I knew Broadreach offered the IDC. I especially loved our course director, Birdie, who made the whole experience so enjoyable. Going through the IDC with Broadreach also made the transition into becoming a Broadreach instructor feel really natural.

What do you enjoy most about being a dive instructor at Broadreach?

One of my favorite parts of teaching in the Caribbean is getting to watch students experience the same trips that meant so much to me growing up. I love helping them discover what makes Broadreach so special and sharing the magic of exploring places that not many people get to see. Being a Broadreach student definitely helped prepare me to become an instructor. I had some amazing instructors, and I often think back to what made them so great and try to bring that same energy to my own students.

What advice do you have for alumni students interested in returning as summer staff?

I would definitely say go for it! Broadreach is such a great place to get started as an instructor, gain experience, and continue learning. It’s also really special to come back to a place that had such a big impact on you and get to help create those same amazing experiences for new students.
