“We learned so much on every dive, and also learned not in the water – it taught me how to properly experience another culture and skills that I can use later in life. What I learned about life, culture and scuba skills exceeded all my expectations. This has been the best trip I have been on, mostly because of the instructors and other students!” Alexandra, high school alumna
Six PADI scuba certifications available:
Five hours of service learning through community-based projects.
Requirements:
After traveling halfway around the world, head to your home for the first week, Pemuteran, a quaint Indonesian fishing village. Explore the underwater treasures of the northern dive sites, participating in your first ever muck dive – an amazing opportunity to spot rare frogfish and scorpion fish. Then, jump right into your dive certifications by beginning the PADI Advanced Open Water coursework. Take a break to partner with Project AWARE and conduct a Dive Against Debris, an underwater trash cleanup that helps collect data on the types of trash plaguing the world’s oceans. Feeling refreshed and confident after your first dives, you head east, stopping along the way to hike to a picturesque remote waterfall.
Embark on an underwater exploration with the village of Amed as your new home base. You’ll stay in bungalows near the black volcanic beach, diving from shore as well as traditional jukung boats, surrounded by waters teeming with life. Experience an exhilarating dawn dive, and behold the USAT Liberty, one of the most famous wreck dives in the world. From there, you’ll venture to dive sites Seraya and Coral Garden to find dozens of unique sea creatures you can’t see anywhere else on Earth.
Head south along the Balinese coast and visit the island of Nusa Penida, known for its world-class drift diving and large pelagic creatures – manta and eagle rays, white-tip and black tip sharks, tuna, and giant trevally. Test your luck, venturing out to sites where you may spy a manta ray or the elusive mola mola (sunfish). Later, you’ll dry out your dive gear and head to Ubud, the cultural and spiritual center of Bali. You’ll explore temples and terraced rice fields, step inside a royal palace, visit the Monkey Forest and taste delicious Balinese food. You’ll also witness first-hand the magical Kecak Fire and Trance Dance, a performance inspired by ancient tales of the supernatural.
Take a short island-hopper flight to the majestic islands of the Komodo National Park. Your home for the next week is a resort on one of these tiny islands! Over the next five days, you’ll experience some of the most pristine, unspoiled dive sites in the world, accessible only to a lucky few. Hike to the peak of an island for a spectacular view of the group of islands that make up the Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. See if you can spot the infamous Komodo Dragon named after the islands they inhabit!
Time to return to Bali to board your flights back home, armed with unforgettable memories and new friendships.
