Your first few days are busy as you meet the crew, are assigned your dive gear for the trip, settle into your yacht and get accustomed to the pace of life aboard. The 46-foot specially equipped catamaran provides an ideal platform for diving, sailing and adventure. Days start early as you share all of the responsibilities, from sailing to keeping your home “ship-shape”. Over the next two weeks you will be the skipper, first mate, navigator, dive safety officer and chef for this journey. Learn the language of the sea as your yacht slices through wind and waves on a sail to Grand Case. Adventure awaits! Whether it’s your first time diving, or you are already certified, the knack for scuba will come to you in no time and soon you’ll be blowing bubbles and checking out the stunning reefs and cool fish. Try your hand at wakeboarding or waterskiing in the calm waters that surround your yacht.

St. Barts feels like the French Riviera, très français. Perfect beaches, turquoise waters and shallow reefs teeming with life. Whether you are working on your Open Water or your Advanced certification, the diverse and accessible dive sites in the St. Bart’s Marine Reserve are ideal. A short hike takes us to the bodysurfing beach at Anse Flamands on the windward side of the island. Spend an afternoon learning and practicing sailing fundamentals, feeling the wind and trimming the sails as we learn to sail Lasers. The town of Gustavia is perhaps the nicest in the entire Caribbean with hip shops, yummy crepes and homemade mango ice cream. Back on the yacht, as you watch the sunset over Les Gros Ilets with your new friends and reflect on all you’ve done, its hard to imagine that you have only been here for a few days.

Saba, known as the Unspoiled Queen of the Caribbean because of its thriving ecosystems above and below the surface. The island majestically rises out of the ocean and disappears into the clouds. Its world-famous marine park protects some of the best diving in the Caribbean. The sheer walls and towering pinnacles of Babylon, Man-of-War Shoals and Diamond Rock are phenomenal and perfect for finishing your PADI Coral Reef Conservation certification. Spend a day ashore volunteering with the Saba Conservation Foundation and exploring the picturesque village of tiny cottages and artisan shops known as “The Bottom”.

summer scuba diving camps

Sail on to the picture perfect, deserted island of Tintemarre. The white sand and crystal clear water provide the ideal setting for your final day in the Caribbean. Do one last dive on the wreck of the Remorqueur. After nightfall, head to the beach for a campfire with your shipmates. As you toast marshmallows under the starry sky you reflect on your adventure. Twelve people who were strangers have become a team; working together, learning from each other and building lifelong friendships.

Caribbean: Underwater Discoveries 12-Day Voyage Reviews & Testimonials

Reviews & Testimonials

Anna and Neil Mintz from Encinitas, CA

Our son had a wonderful experience. He found the trip while researching summer programs and had very high expectations which were met at every level. He raved about the trip leaders- all three leaders seemed to be very skilled in working with teens. The program was seamless from start to finish, and I was amazed at how much the students accomplished in a few weeks. We thank you for organizing such exceptional programs and for the professionalism and competence of all of your staff.

Kate Kerns from Richmond, VA

Can’t tell you what a wonderful experience Elizabeth had on Broadreach. The only regret she has is that she didn’t go for 3 weeks! It seemed to be well run, organized and attentive to safety which is good for the mother’s mind! Thanks to you and all for providing this incredible experience!

Laurie Milani from New Orleans, LA

I felt confident that Jenna would be safe and would have a good time. She was so excited to go on the trip, I was afraid the trip would be a let-down. To the contrary, it exceeded all her expectations. Jenna had a fabulous time, learned a great deal and made terrific friends. She loved the staff, the fellow students, the boat, the location, the activities. A 10 out of 10!

Hannah M. from Dallas, TX

When I decided I wanted to attend a Broadreach trip in a foreign country, my parents were concerned for my safety. Now at the end of the trip I see how incredibly safe our group was at all times; with Broadreach, parents and students have nothing to worry about. Every experience on this trip was one that will impact me forever. Diving in Saba, community service and boat living all exceeded my highest expectations. I learned to dive and sail but, more importantly, I learned about new places, people and cultures. I would hands-down do it all over again and I will carry the memories with me forever.

Catherine Rooney

Our daughter thoroughly enjoyed her Broadreach experience. She made new friends, learned new skills and had a great time visiting new places. As far as we can tell, there was a strong emphasis on safety and she seems very comfortable with the program and staff.

Isabelle Ruddy from Branford, CT

This past summer I went on the underwater discoveries program and I had an amazing time. I met new great friends, had a lot of fun, and learned many new things like how to scuba dive, sail, and I learned about different cultures. It was a great experience and I would definitely do a similar program again in the future.

Katie Krupnick

My Broadreach trip was one of the most memorable things I have done in my entire life! I loved every aspect of the trip from the inseparable bond formed between our instructors and within group, to every action filled day! My favorite place was Saba and i especially enjoyed the dives we did there along with the beautiful town and hike. I learned how to Scuba dive (my new favorite thing in the entire world) and work with a group of people that I had never met. I walked away with tears in my eyes, a greater value of teamwork, confidence and so many new friendships that will last a life time.

Mara Pogue from Cincinnati, OH

Jackson had a great trip! I thought your office was an A+ in organizing and communicating all aspects of the trip. I will highly recommend your program to anyone looking for a learning adventure for their teen!

Robin Bellerby from Plano, TX

I must tell you how impressed I am with your organization. You leave no questions unanswered, and it sounds like you are constantly thinking about the “what-ifs.” It’s a big step to entrust your child to strangers, but I can tell Broadreach takes this responsibility very seriously.

McKenzie Millard

Mac had a fantastic time and made some great friends. She came home so much more confident and grownup it is amazing she was only gone two weeks. She also loved the counselors and thought they did a great job of teaching, but more importantly keeping the camp fun and helping the group come together.

Orly L. from Highland Park, IL

I really loved this trip! Visiting new places really widened my perspectives on life. I really enjoyed living in such close quarters with other kids. It was amazing- by the end we were like a family. This trip really made my summer amazing!

Robert Boschetto

Our daughter had the time of her life. She loved the adventure of living on a boat, learning how to scuba dive (she liked the night dives best), hiking on the islands, getting to know her crew mates, and the beauty of the ocean and the islands. She came back happy, healthy, and full of enthusiasm over what she experienced. She felt the trip was extremely well organized and supervised. We feel she learned things and was challenged to grow in ways that were only possible by going on a trip like this. She got along great with the other students on the trip and would love to do something like this again – soon. We are really happy with how the trip went – the experience was a great match for her.

Guy G. from Park City, UT

It was easily the highlight of my summer. My favorite part was getting scuba certified and doing dives. I also liked hiking and the trail-building.

Caribbean: Underwater Discoveries 12-Day Voyage FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in the tuition cost and what additional expenses should I expect?

Tuition is all inclusive for instruction, food, accommodations, and activities from the time you arrive in country. However, you are responsible for your airfare, spending money (we suggest about $150-200 depending on the program), any required textbooks, and student expenses such as medical fees. Some trips require scuba gear which can be rented, purchased or in some cases borrowed from Broadreach. Finally, for our high school trips that offer college credit, you can elect to receive an official Lesley University credit transcript for approximately $180 per credit hour. For more information about expenses that might apply to your program, click here.

How does travel work?

For most programs, we have a few recommended flights and an arrival time range, and we usually give you the option to book flights on your own or through our travel agency partner. A few programs have required group flights, which we set up in advance. Students travel independently, but often meet up along the way, and we collect student itinerary details. Broadreach instructors will be waiting in the arrivals hall of the destination airport to greet each student, and they’ll be wearing special shirts and holding a Broadreach sign. We also mail students Broadreach shirts to wear while traveling which makes it easy for them to identify each other. Typically, making travel arrangements and the actual travel days go very smoothly.

What is boat life like on live-aboard programs?

Our boats have 4 cabins with attached bathrooms, which are divided up between girls and boys. The cabins are mostly used for students to store their bags and change since most students choose to sleep on the deck of the boat in one of a few safe, flat areas. Students bring sleeping bags and pads, and sleeping under the stars with the Caribbean summer breeze is often one of the highlights of the experience. Our boat life video will give you a feel for what it’s like.

How many students are in a group? What is the male/female ratio?

The majority of programs will have a maximum of 12 students in a group. We aim for a balance of males and females, but in our experience, the gender ratio plays a small role in the success of each program.

Do most participants come alone or with friends?

Most participants come alone, so there is no need to be concerned if you don’t know anyone else on your program. It’s normal to be a little nervous about not knowing other students in advance, but within a day of starting your program you’ll be laughing and sharing exciting adventures with new friends.

How does Broadreach address safety?

Safety is our top priority, and it is something we evaluate from every angle throughout the year. We’re very proud of our safety record over the past 26 years of running international programs for students. There are so many ways to address how we handle safety, including the extensive experience and training of our instructors, the specific locations we choose to visit, the relationships we have established with our local partners, and the 24/7 support we provide our groups. We have extensive program-specific risk management plans and safety standards that we adhere to. We’d be happy to talk about safety in more detail for the program you’re considering if you’d like to call our office.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance?

We require that students have at least $100,000 of emergency evacuation coverage and some kind of international medical coverage, as well as coverage for scuba diving for programs that include diving. We offer two different policy options, or if you already have a policy that meets this criteria, we would just collect those policy details after enrollment.

Our Tuition Protection policy covers cancellations for medical reasons up to 100% and for any other reason up to 75% (except for residents of NY state). It’s also a great comprehensive travel insurance policy, including medical coverage, emergency evacuation, travel delay, baggage (loss or delay), etc. The cost of the policy ranges from $339-379 based on the program duration. For more specific coverage details, please call our office.

Who will my instructors be?

Broadreach instructors are highly experienced, passionate, energetic and supportive. The average age of our instructors is 28 years old, and depending on the program, they meet specific qualifications (a Master’s degree in the subject area, PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor certification, foreign language fluency, Wilderness First Responder certification, etc).

Do your programs accommodate food preferences or food allergies?

We do our best to accommodate allergies and food preferences but we consider the situation, country and the program to determine whether it will be a good fit for the specific dietary restriction. It’s important that you let Broadreach know well in advance of any food preferences or allergies so we can determine whether your restrictions will work on your program.

Will students be able to call home or access the internet?

Students will call home within a few hours of landing in the destination airport to let parents know they have arrived safely and have met up with the group. For most programs, students will have the option to call home once a week, typically on Sundays. Timing for calling home depends on the schedule of the trip and location. Usually, students call home with the in-country instructor cell phones or via Skype if good internet service is available. If you’d like to learn more about our full communication policy, please call our office.

Can I contact Broadreach alumni families for more information?

Absolutely! Just call our office and we can put you in touch with past participants who have joined the programs that interest you. Our alumni families are happy to share their first-person experiences.

How does payment work? Is the deposit or tuition refundable?

We require a non-refundable deposit of $1000 to lock in your spot, and then the final balance can be spread out and paid in a few different ways. The final payment is requested by about 3 months before departure. Our optional tuition protection plan covers cancellations for medical reasons up to 100% and cancellations for any other reason up to 75% (except for residents of NY state).

Do you offer any discounts or scholarships?

In the fall, we have a few different early enrollment discounts – please call our office for more information. We also offer a 5% discount on the second enrollment from the same immediate family in a summer. This offer is available to an individual student or siblings. The 5% discount will be applied to the program of lesser cost, and cannot be combined with any other discounts.

We do offer some scholarships through the Broadreach Foundation. Please call our office for more information on applying.
