Requirements:
Welcome to Sao Miguel, your home base for adventures over the next 16 days! Meet your instructors and Broadreach group at the airport. Get acquainted with your new crew, Broadreach, and explore a bit of the island you’ll call home. Visit Lagoa do Fogo, inside the caldera of the Fogo volcano. Hike down to the lake for a bit of lunch before exploring Caldeira Velha, relaxing in the hot springs and visiting a remarkable waterfall!
The adventures continue! Observe the landscapes and marine life the Azores are most known for while getting a taste for life as a marine biologist. Encounter dolphins and whales on a full-day excursion and assist marine biology researchers by collecting data for real-life projects. You’ll also try your hand at snorkeling or diving and take in the postcard-worthy landscapes of the Sete Cidades. You’ll be learning a ton while leaving time for activities like paddling, hiking and visiting a natural ocean hot spring.
With some marine biology experience under your belt, you’re ready to spend your days as a marine biologist! Get a behind-the-scenes look into the life of a marine biologist, collecting and analyzing data as well as photographing and recording whales and dolphins from a boat as well as analyzing the data collected in a research lab.
You’re halfway through the trip! Celebrate passing your midterm with by exploring more of the island’s geography and culture. Check out waterfalls and discover some of the island’s key agricultural products, pineapples and tea, through plantation visits. Sample tasty local food cooked with the Earth’s own geothermal energy. Finally, you’ll prepare for some water-based adventures ahead by refreshing your snorkel or dive skills.
While completing your final projects, you’ll have some more ocean encounters in store! Swim with dolphins and snorkel or (for already certified divers) dive with majestic Mobula rays. Celebrate completing your final presentations with some adventure activities: canyoning and stand-up paddle boarding or surfing! Finally, head into town for your last evening, reflecting on the highlights of the past 15 days as you prepare to leave the group that has become like family over the past couple of weeks.
It’s not a goodbye but a see you later! Head to the airport for your flights home. Wish your fellow participants and instructors well until you see them again!
