“As a divemaster, you focus on overseeing and helping in individual cases when a student is having trouble with a skill. The first time I was called to help a student practice a skill I was nervous and very excited, however my anxiety was quickly replaced by pride as my student succeeded in the skill like he had never had a problem. This excitement at teaching one of my favorite activities only grew as I was assigned to a Broadreach boat. I like to think I had the best boat of kids on the water. Between helping in the water and onboard I began to see the other side of Broadreach, which I was not shown on my previous trip as a student.” Patrick, college alumnus

Itinerary

Day 1-4

All aboard the Broadreach support boat

Welcome to the first day of your professional dive career. Arrive in St. Martin, and hop aboard your unique, behinds-the-scenes glimpse into the world of dive training– the Broadreach fleet support boat! Live on a boat with staff assisting other program boats in the area as you jump right into your Divemaster training. Strap on your fins and fine tune your skills with some confined water circuit exercises, knowledge development and begin the basics of leadership training. Dive into what it takes to be a PADI Divemaster through knowledge development sessions and start planning for your future in the world of scuba.

Day 5-8

Remember that first day of OW?

Whether you’ve been on 40 dives or 200, you’ll always remember your first day of learning skills in the water, and now you get to be a part of that journey for someone else. Work alongside a variety of Broadreach instructors on confined (COW) and open water (OW) dives as they teach the basics to  novice divers. Assist with group management in the water, demonstrate skills, help them practice and watch your leadership capabilities begin to grow. After a challenging week of Divemaster training, take your final theory exams then celebrate your huge accomplishment with some town time celebrations in beautiful St. Barts and an epic trip to body surfing beach.

Day 9-15

Learn, do, then teach

It’s time for you to put all your newfound knowledge and skill development into action in Nevis and St. Kitts by joining a Broadreach program boat to teach, lead and mentor. Get a taste for life as a Broadreach Instructor as you assist the program’s instructors with the training of younger students both above and below the water. Role model best dive practices as you begin to lead dives, assist with Advanced Open Water training and support those students who may need a little more assistance or one-on-one instruction. Developing your expertise in a real-world setting with actual students will not only make you a better dive facilitator, but will provide you with a new set of valuable leadership skills you’ll use for the rest of your life.

Day 16-23

From here, you can go anywhere

Wrap up your first steps as a PADI professional with a little more fine-tuned training. Learn to create underwater maps, assist on specialty training dives and lead more dives with aspiring divers. Gain feedback on your performance as a Divemaster from the OWSIs on the boat, and hone your role as a leader. Join the boat crew for some sustainable community service projects in Saba, enjoy some time exploring town, and head home with the confidence that you are ready to take on your next adventures in diving with a new sense of purpose and accomplishment.
