Carlton grew up with a passion for the outdoors, the ocean and adventure. At the age of 19, he became a PADI Master Diver Instructor and by 23, he had earned his U.S. Coast Guard Masters license.
From a young age, Carlton knew he wanted to explore the corners of the Earth, and left a corporate job on Wall Street to pursue his passion. At 28, he created Broadreach with a vision to educate teens through travel and experiential learning. At the time, summer opportunities for teenagers were primarily confined to summer camps or outdoor day programs, and Carlton wanted to design courses that took students out of their comfort zones and into the world. He launched trips from Egypt to Ecuador that engaged students to learn about themselves, their passions and our planet’s remarkable cultures.
Although the day-to-day operations are now in the capable hands of our Directors and year-round team, Carlton still provides guidance toward his vision on a weekly basis. Currently, Carlton lives in Durham with his wife Gina and daughters Peyton, Baylor and Phoebe.
Kate Farthing has been with Broadreach since 2007, leading and scouting numerous student programs around the world. Growing up in the mountains of North Carolina, she developed an early curiosity for exploration and the outdoors, which continues to serve her well as Broadreach’s Director of Dive and Sail Adventures. Kate is passionate about ensuring exceptional experiences for every student and family, hoping to share her own passion for the world we live in. She serves on the CDC’s Emergency Partners Information Connection (EPIC) Board, and her time working with Tompkins Conservation in Patagonia, Chile helped continue to build her dedication to exploring the wild world. When she’s not spending her time volunteering with her therapy dogs, Penny and Peter, Kate is training for her next triathlon or spending as much time outside as possible!
Nate has been with Broadreach since 2006. He currently oversees Broadreach Partnerships, custom programs for schools, groups and faculty-led courses. He has a Master’s degree in Educational Psychology, Measurement and Evaluation from UNC Chapel Hill and uses his past experiences as an educator to lead Broadreach’s annual teacher training and create incredible student experiences abroad. His love of the outdoors and travel has taken him on adventures to over 40 different countries and six continents.
Carley is an avid traveler and mother of two passport-toting little boys. After receiving her Bachelor of Arts in English and Corporate Communications from Elon University, where she studied abroad in Australia, Carley jetted off to the Netherlands for a year-long stint as an au pair to a Dutch family. Fully committing to her love of exploring the world, Carley became a travel agent for STA Travel, working in D.C., New Zealand and San Francisco over six years. Eventually, she put down roots in Raleigh and began her adventure with Broadreach. When she’s not traveling, Carley is outdoors as much as possible with her family and her golden retriever, Bonnie. A super enthusiastic foodie, Carley will try anything once, including tree ants and fried tarantula in Cambodia. Recent family travels include Northern Ireland, Denmark, Quebec, France and Iceland, and her happy place is Sonoma on a sunny September day.
Patrick comes to Broadreach with a unique slew of outdoor jobs. He worked on a remote marine conservation base situated along Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula, captained boats in the Virgin Islands, and managed a dive shop on Hawaii’s Big Island. Now, he oversees our Advanced Scuba and Marine Biology programs across the world. He’s putting his Business and Marketing degree from the University of Richmond to use in an unconventional way as he plans, scouts, and organizes trips for us alongside leading trips to Bali, the Bahamas and Curacao.
Claire hails from across the pond. It was her travels while attending the University of Glasgow in Scotland that ignited her passion for teaching, and led her to spend her summers working at a summer camp for teens in the U.S. After school, she traveled around the world (twice), and discovered her passion for scuba diving and the underwater world. Claire has been leading and directing Broadreach dive programs for over 10 years and currently oversees our St. Martin based Caribbean voyages. When she’s not diving, you can find Claire outdoors running, hiking, camping or exploring new places.
Hailing from North Carolina, Tricia has been studying Spanish since kindergarten. She honed her passion for the language by attending an immersion school in her hometown of Greensboro, and later moved to the mountains where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Language and a Master’s degree in Romance Language focusing on Spanish higher education—both from Appalachian State University. During college, Tricia taught English to young adults in Medellin, Colombia and studied abroad in Madrid and Sevilla, Spain. Combining her passion for teaching with athletics, Tricia also coached a youth sports camp for three years. In 2017, Tricia returned to Spain to lead a group of students on their own study abroad experience. She moved to Raleigh that same year, and began a job at Broadreach on our programming team. When not at work, Tricia attempts to discover Raleigh through running and Spanish clubs, crafts home decorations, and seeks adventure and inspiration for new Broadreach programs.
Virginia grew up in the small coastal town of Madison, Connecticut. She moved to North Carolina for her undergraduate studies at Wake Forest University. Virginia later returned to the U.S and worked as a teacher in Charleston, SC. Virginia has led many international programs and works full-time as a Broadreach International Education Coordinator.
A Colorado native, outdoor enthusiast, and world traveler, Jordan brings invaluable experience to our team. Jordan started with Broadreach in 2012 leading Spanish, biology, and public health programs before joining our Headquarters team in 2017. Jordan has led Broadreach programs in India, South Africa, Costa Rica, Dominica, Peru, and the Caribbean. Leading programs for Broadreach inspired him to receive his Master’s in International Education Management from The Middlebury Institute of International Studies. Jordan uses his Master degree and experience in the development, coordination, and administration of our international scuba programs. Jordan is passionate about Broadreach’s mission and wants to continue to inspire students to gain a better understanding of the world and what it means to be a global citizen.
Kate is new to the Broadreach team, joining as the Marketing + Communications Coordinator. A native of North Carolina, she received her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Elon University. She then spent nearly five years working in a communications role with international and local teachers, as well as many public schools in North Carolina. Kate became so inspired by the work of international educators that she decided to try it for herself — in South Korea! There, she spent a year working with students and exploring the beautiful Asian continent (and the amazing food it offered). Through this adventure, Kate’s dedication to cultural exchange and travel strengthened, and she is excited to continue to work with students as they create their own global experiences. When she’s not thinking about the next place to explore, Kate is either drinking coffee, playing soccer or spending as much time as possible outside!
New to Broadreach, Emily is excited to bring her own unique passions to an organization that helps students find their own! Born in Seattle, Emily eventually landed on a permaculture farm in North Carolina, where her family lived in a Tipi. Her earliest days were spent catching chickens, milking goats, and exploring the nooks and crannies of her farm backyard. As a youngster, she attended a small community school that emphasized education through explorative outdoor learning, which sparked her love of the natural world and belief in experiential education. Her explorations of the outdoors and dedication to the sport of swimming led her to a degree in Biology and Environmental Studies from Kenyon College, where she was also a member of the women’s varsity swim team. Emily’s love of travel took shape during a summer as an au pair in New Zealand. Professionally she has pursued her passion for outdoor education and fitness, while still adventuring through the world- hiking the El Camino de Santiago, restoring hiking trails in Greece, teaching English in Spain, etc. In her downtime, Emily trains for triathlons, does Crossfit, mountain bikes, and is up for anything outside with her dog Stella.

During college, she pursued her passion to serve the community during her four years with Eckerd College Search and Rescue as a Coxswain and Operations Coordinator. She continued her Broadreach career in the Caribbean as Base Operations Manager. Raised in Virginia, she loves to spend time hiking and kayaking through the Blue Ridge Mountains. Garnett is excited to continue to work with Broadreach and join the full time team as the Executive Assistant.
