Your First 24 Hours on a Non-Caribbean Broadreach Trip: What to Expect

By: Bethany Remington, Broadreach HQ High School Adventures, Middle School, Scuba, Marine Biology, Vet Medicine, Wildlife Conservation

Feeling nervous before your Broadreach trip is totally normal, especially if you’re traveling to a brand-new country, meeting people for the first time, or trying something completely outside your comfort zone. One of the best ways to ease that anxiety is to know what to expect.

If your program doesn’t start in St. Martin, your first 24 hours will still follow the Broadreach rhythm of warm welcomes and new connections, but the details may vary a bit more depending on the destination. Arrival times and first-day activities can look different from trip to trip, but this outline should give you a good idea of your first day. If you have more specific questions about your program, check out the itinerary on the program page of our website or reach out — we’re happy to help!

Step One: Airport Arrival and Instructor Meet-Up

Once you arrive at your program’s international airport, you’ll pass through customs and collect your luggage. From there, head toward the arrivals area, where you’ll find one (or both!) of your Broadreach instructors waiting to greet you. You’ll have received photos of them in your final Trip Update before departure, so you’ll know exactly who to look for. Look for the Broadreach t-shirts and welcoming smiles!

After you’ve connected with your instructor, you’ll take a moment to call home and let your family know you’ve arrived safely. Once the rest of the group arrives, you’ll head to your first night’s accommodations.

Getting Settled and Meeting Your Group

After checking in, you’ll drop off your bags and officially start the group experience. You’ll get to know your fellow Broadreachers through fun icebreaker games, meet your instructors more formally, and get an overview of what’s ahead.

You’ll go through an orientation to Broadreach, learn about your group’s goals, and set some of your intentions for the trip. It’s all about building trust, community, and excitement for what’s ahead.

The Adventure Begins

By the next day, it’s time to jump in! If your program includes scuba diving, you’ll likely begin your training or complete a refresher/check-in dive if you’re already certified. On non-scuba programs, you might dive into activities right away — think ziplining, hiking, whitewater rafting, or other exciting local adventures.

24 Hours In: You’re Already Part of the Team

In just one day, you’ll go from airport arrival to feeling like part of something bigger. You’ll already know your instructors, have shared laughs with your group, and have started to explore a new country. Whether you’re heading underwater, into the mountains, or through a rainforest — your journey is just beginning, and the best is yet to come.
