Trip Description

Throughout the years, we have watched many of our participants mature, developing strong leadership and interpersonal skills, in addition to diving expertise. In order to allow these exceptional young adults to take their Broadreach and diving experience to the next level, we established the Divemaster Intern Program (DIP) and the Divemaster Program (DM). While the first and foremost goal of these programs is to earn a professional level diving certification, candidates also build a foundation of invaluable leadership skills. The PADI Divemaster course involves hard work and rigorous training, but the payoff is both rewarding and immediate. With the successful completion of DIP or DM, Divemaster candidates are certified to work anywhere in the world leading dives as a diving professional.

Divemaster Intern Program (DIP) – Divemaster interns spend their first week honing their dive skills and achieving an instructor level knowledge of dive theory and skill demonstration. After this initial training, the interns move onto Broadreach yachts for the remainder of the program and continue their skill development while assisting Broadreach instructors in a variety of areas such as scuba certification classes, gear and equipment operation, service and maintenance, sailing and other tasks. In addition to hard skill development, DIP provides interns with opportunities for personal growth and the development of important soft skills such as leadership, facilitation, communication and group management. Space in DIP is limited and there is a competitive application process to be accepted. Please call for more details.

Divemaster Program (DM) – This shorter route to achieving your PADI Divemaster certification does not include an intern component. Students live on a sailboat with up to 11 other Divemaster candidates, two Broadreach PADI Instructors and a skipper. The Instructors focus on honing the candidates' dive skills in the water through simulations, as well as teaching them instructor level dive theory. Divemaster candidates learn what it means to be a dive professional and the responsibilities of being in charge of a group of divers underwater. There is no application required to sign up for this course.

Prerequisites for PADI Divemaster certification include:

  • 18 years old
  • Rescue Diver certification
  • Minimum of 45 logged dives at start of program
  • Proof of current CPR and First Aid certifications

PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor Program (OWSI)

The PADI OWSI program is the next professional level certification after Divemaster. During this course, qualified candidates learn to use and adapt the PADI system of diver education to individual student needs through comprehensive instructor training. Once certified, PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors may conduct a broad range of PADI programs from Open Water Scuba Diver to Divemaster. Instructor candidates also complete Emergency First Responder Instructor training, which certifies them to teach CPR and First Aid. Broadreach is the only program of its kind to offer teens the ability to earn their Open Water Diver certification all the way up to instructor level.

Prerequisites for OWSI certification include:

  • 18 years old
  • Divemaster certification
  • Minimum of 100 logged dives at start of program
  • Proof of current CPR and First Aid certifications

Broadreach has been a tremendous experience. I have learned a great deal about various cultures, activities and people in my three summers with this organization. But I have also learned much about who I am and how I can help and influence others. Brent Houck, Amherst, MA
