Trip Description
Get set for the adventure odyssey of a lifetime. This voyage spans more than 500 nautical miles of the Lesser Antilles, from the Leeward Islands to just off the coast of South America. The 50-foot yacht you call home for the next month provides an outstanding environment for comprehensive sail training and wide-open adventure. This trip is not for everyone. Life aboard a boat can be challenging, demanding hard work and respect for your vessel and the sea. Yet the rewards of your experience, labor and training are great. You appreciate the subtleties of your yacht under sail. You learn firsthand about Caribbean culture and its people. You are a sailor, you are an explorer, and to the rest of the crew, you are part of a team. Together you create an unforgettable journey most sailors only dream about.
On board, take the helm, plot your course and navigate by GPS, night sail guided by the stars, snorkel reefs teeming with marine life, catch dinner on an afternoon sail, anchor in secluded island hideaways. Learn about ocean currents and weather patterns as well as seamanship and safety at sea on the way to earning your International Yacht Training (IYT) International Crew, Radio Operator, Watchkeeper and Flotilla Skipper certifications. On island, venture up to volcanic craters blanketed in vibrant rainforest before scouting local markets to provision for the next leg of our journey. Bequia, Mustique, Canouan...explore islands few have heard of, in ways ordinary tourists do not.
En route to Trinidad, sail through the Grenadine passage. Try scuba diving on the vibrant Anse Chastanet reefs. Visit Bequia's historic whaling town and port. Absorb the tranquility and beauty of the tiny Iles des Saintes. Leap off Grenada's Seven Sisters Falls into crystal pools. Trek the dense tropical jungles of Dominica. Investigate untouched beaches and pristine marine parks. In all, explore more than fifteen islands rich in French, British and Spanish colonial histories.
Arc of the Caribbean is the only program of its kind in depth and scope. The program is designed for those looking for a rare adventure that is rigorous and educational. Heading into our final port, you are an accomplished sailor. You have grown in your ability to work within a group and lead a team. You have forged lifelong friendships. You have gone places few have gone, accomplished things few have accomplished. By the end of our journey, you have developed a new awareness of the world, a greater sense of self and confidence in leadership.
* A yacht delivery extension is available for participants who are interested in extending their sail training experience for four to five days after the end of the program. Extension participants make the return sail back to St. Martin along with staff and other interested Broadreachers. The extension offers participants yacht delivery experience and the opportunity to hone their sailing skills with longer sails and a smaller crew.
