Seville is our entry point to our one-of-a-kind cultural journey. We’ll leap right into the adventure and explore the local landscape with a trek along the Caminito del Rey, a picturesque walkway winding through the Graganta del Chorro gorge. Delve into the history of Seville by perusing the Alcázar of Seville, an ancient royal palace built by Moorish Muslim kings. Then get moving like the locals while walking the cobblestone streets and kayaking the only navigable river in Spain, the Guadalquivir river.
Next we make our way to a tiny, white-washed village in the province of Cádiz, Prado del Rey. This picturesque Andalusian village is where we put down roots for our next adventures — workshops with youth sports teams, coaches, Physical Therapists and an immersive homestay with a local family. Mornings here are spent taking intensive Spanish language lessons and honing reading, writing and comprehension skills through the lens of sports and kinesthetics. After class, flex your PT muscles as you dive into an introduction to the field with a local Physical Therapist and play a game of basketball at the nearby school. In the evenings, explore authentic Spanish traditions such as flamenco and tapas. We say goodbye to the families that so graciously welcomed us into their lives and homes with promises to write and return.
We travel to a community outside the city of Granada, nicknamed the “Moorish Jewel,” to volunteer with a local non-profit that provides a haven for low-income Spanish families. Take part in hands on workshops, including soap, pottery and furniture making, plus teach children how to read, and practice a healthy lifestyle. In Granada, we have an opportunity to visit the Alhambra, a former fortress and palace of Moorish monarchs. Fall in love with Granada’s medieval streets, public squares and many important monuments. You’ll even get to hone your flamenco dance skills with a professional dancer and visit a locals’ spot for an authentic performance.
Next, head east to the province of Valencia, near the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Immerse yourself in the world of soccer and learn how student athletes stay healthy and perform their best on and off the field. Build cross-cultural friendships with fútbol academy students who have dreams of playing professionally. Learn introductory physical therapy techniques to practice on each other. The famous Valencia Province sunshine makes most days perfect for a scrimmage and a walk through the city.
Close out the program by visiting the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, home to Real Madrid C.F. As we go out for a final dinner and farewell, we take a moment to process all the adventure and culture we’ve experienced, all the Spanish we’ve learned in such a short time, our new families in Prado del Rey, the lives we touched in Granada and the people who have spent the last 21 days with us on this life-changing adventure. For now, it’s adiós, but not for long.
