The Broadreach HQ deliberated, here are the results!
The results are in! From life changing encounters with animals in Costa Rica, to the dive and sail adventures in the Caribbean, this year’s submissions to the 2018 Broadreach Video Competition covered it all. With so many amazing submissions, the competition was tough, but the Broadreach HQ poured through them all and voted for our favorites. Drumroll…. and the winners are:
Not only did I learn how to scuba dive and sail a catamaran yacht, I also got to know some amazing people. During the 3 weeks we have lived on our boat, which was called Pom D’ô, we became closer and closer every day. By the end of the trip we really did become a family. This has been an experience that was totally different than anything I have ever done. I have so many great memories and I cannot stop talking about all of them.
One of my favorite memories would be seeing a shooting star during our last night on the boat. We were all sitting on the trampoline, talking and fooling around. And then all of the sudden we all see this brilliant star falling across the sky. It was magical!
Another great memory was seeing all the turtles we saw while we were doing dishes, reading our books or relaxing. There were a lot of them surfacing for air next to our boat. We also saw many other fascinating animals. During our sail we saw a ton of flying fish shooting out of the water next to our boat. During our dives we got to see stingrays, octopuses and pufferfish and we even saw nurse sharks!
I loved the fact that my boat was international. Even though we mostly spoke english, you could hear a french, dutch or german conversation from time to time.
The Broadreach Costa Rica Veterinary Experience provided me with more hands on experience than I could have ever imagined. While, learning important basics in the field on veterinary medicine, I got to apply what I learned in the lessons in a way I could never do as an undergraduate in the United states. We also got exposed to many fields of vet-med which helped diversify my experience with different animals.
Along with the educational lessons and experiences, we also got to do many fun excursions that helped our small group bond even more. Not only did we get to experience Costa Rican culture, but we got to make connections with different organizations and veterinarians throughout our journey through the island. The friendships I have made with my broadreach group of students and instructors are relationships that I will value and continue throughout my career in veterinary medicine.
Exploring the Yucatan Peninsula opened up a whole new world to me. Seeing the land both underwater and above allowed me to fully appreciate unique Mexican culture. The many people we met along the way, from scuba instructors to friendly locals constantly reminded us how heritage and history plays a prevalent role in everyday life. From diving in the cenotes to battling changing currents while drift diving, every turn provided a new challenge to face.
That being said, what I learned on my trip was not only textbook information about ancient Mayan societies or underwater safety, but how to appreciate culture, the environment, and the importance of family.
