Alum and Broadreach Staff Audrey Barrett in the News
We wanted to share this excerpt from The Kinkaid Magazine in Houston, Texas about Broadreach alumni and staff Audrey Barrett.

GENERATION K - THIS IS WHO WE ARE:

Our youngest alumni, who we call "Generation K," have been out of Kinkaid at most 15 years. This talented group already has made a lasting mark. Here are nine rising stars who are proving to be some of our next community leaders.

Audrey Barrett ’99
Audrey Barrett ’99, a self-proclaimed travel junkie, became addicted to adventure and global causes on an Interim Term trip
to China during her junior year at Kinkaid. “That trip changed everything for me,” says Audrey. “It helped put me on my current path. During that trip I began to understand what I was learning in the classroom—the effects of communism, poverty and pollution.”

Audrey went on to study environmental science at the University of North Carolina. During her college career, she completed a foreign student exchange study at Chiang Mai University in Thailand to research the correlation between tropospheric smog and the formation of ground-level ozone. Once stateside, Audrey hooked up with Broadreach, an organization that provides guided academic travel/adventure programs for teenagers.

Audrey now works for Public Citizen, a national, nonprofit consumer advocacy organization promoting, among other things, a cleaner and healthier environment. Audrey works in the Austin office as the Texas coordinator for the Dump Dirty Diesels Campaign. She testifies about bills that are presented in committee by members of the Texas Legislature. She also organizes and speaks at public workshops across Texas to inform communities how air toxins affect their health with the intention of getting citizens more involved in the legislative process.

“I guess you could say the common theme in my career is educating and teaching others about the things I am most passionate about,” says Audrey. “I want to try to help people who do not have as much and show those who do how to be good stewards.”
