On Broadreach's Underwater Discoveries program, we dive some great sites on the island of St Eustatius with guides from the local dive shop, Golden Rock Dive Center. Also known as Statia, this island is the historical gem of the Caribbean, once one of the key trading ports of the 17th century. Today visitors will find artifacts of days gone past both above and below the sea in one of the most diverse marine ecosystems in the Caribbean. "Statia" boasts not only great historical shipwrecks, but also pristine coral reefs, walls, and modern shipwrecks. Broadreach's Academic Treks offers a program called Marine Mammal Adventure that focuses on marine mammals in Canada. Part of the program takes place at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre, Canada's premier coastal research and teaching facility. Situated in Barkley Sound and adjacent to Pacific Rim National Park, BMSC offers unparalleled access to a wide array of environments including unique coastal, marine and rainforest habitats and exceptional species diversity. Broadreach and Academic Treks conducts Reef surveys on many programs. Founded in 1996, Reef Check is a volunteer, ocean conservation organization designed to save coral reefs globally and temperate reefs in California. Academic Treks students work with the Caribbean Conservation Corporation (CCC) in Costa Rica to help save sea turtles on our Sea Turtle Studies program. CCC, founded by Dr. Archie Carr and others, has as its mission the protection of sea turtles and the habitats upon which they depend. On every Broadreach program, at least one staff member has completed Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training. Many Broadreach leaders complete their WFR training with Wilderness Medical Associates, one of the world's leaders in wilderness medical training. On April 15th, 2002 Broadreach alum Dustin Green (AG1 2001) died tragically in an automobile accident in Raleigh, NC. Dustin was a person who brightened up a room, always had a kind word to say and constantly wore a smile on his face. His family decided to celebrate Dustin's life by creating Dustin's GreenHouse, a non-profit organization dedicated to cultivating today's youth for tomorrow through support for a variety of causes including educational travel. Tripp Costas is the first person awarded a Travel Scholarship by Dustin's GreenHouse. Tripp will be going to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands summer 2002 with Broadreach - the same trip that Dustin took after his senior year. The End of the Line?, a new report by Oceana and WildAid, provides an overview of the factors affecting the survival of sharks, as well as a call to action to reduce the demand for shark products and implement solutions as part of the global effort. The consumption of sharks and shark products are driving shark populations to extinction, and this new report serves as a wake-up call to act now. Diver's Alert Network (DAN) is recreational diving's safety and health organization, supported by the world's largest association of SCUBA divers.
