STS11 Update - Tuesday, July 10, 2012

¡Adios Amigs!

After about 2 hours of sleep, the group staggered out of bed at 4.30 am to throw last minuet items into bulging duffels. At 5am Maddie, Hannah, Sophie, Olivia, Dana, and Lily said groggy, sad good-byes to Lauren, Shereen, Samir, and Kirsty, and 8 of us piled into a van headed for the airport. Keith and I got the ladies through check-in fairly painlessly and hugged and said our good-byes in security.

We posted up near a departure screen to watch the ladies diminish into the airport. For the next hour and a half we sat watching the screen to make sure flights were sent off on time, as we remembered and shared favorite moments and funny stories from the trip.

After the last morning flight took off Keith and I headed back to the hotel where we found Kirsty, Lauren, Shereen, and Samir lounging on couches, finishing up last minuet things. We gathered in the courtyard to enjoy our last breakfast together and share more memories from the trip. At 10.30 the 6 of us headed to the airport. Again, kids passed through check-in painlessly and we hugged and said good-byes in security. The three of us headed upstairs to watch and wave to them in the security line. We waited pensively, sharing stories until the departure screen read 'salio' (departed), next to their flight.

I think it’s safe to say, although folks were sad to say good-bye to their new friends, everyone was excited to get home, see friends and family, eat their favorite foods, and do laundry!!! Keith, Kirsty, and I had a BLAST with STS 11 and are sad to see them go! Kidlets, you will be missed!
