Constellations!
Hey everybody, Danny here bringing the trip update for August 5th 2012.
We started off the day with a quick rain shower before breakfast. After a meal fit for kings and queens of pancakes, bacon, and cereal, we made our way back to relax until 9:00. From there we made our way across the island with our tour guide, Lee, who showed us around old plantations. We hiked up paths created by her to explore plantations owned by Burton Williams, who still has descendants here today. Today seemed like it was exceptionally hot just to spite us but we continued anyway with minimal complaints. We learned how the English loyalists driven out of America came here and built plantations. After 20 years they had sapped the grounds dry of nutrients and left, leaving the buildings behind to crumble.
We went through three different plantations learning a variety of facts and interesting things about the island San Salvador itself. After our third very humid hike, we made our way back for a lunch of grilled cheese. When we finished lunch, most of us decided to go to the beach and relax in the water while some of us stayed behind to rest. We tossed the soccer ball and Frisbee in the nice cool water for a while and ended off the swim by Parker having us bury him in the sand from head to toe. I wasn’t even sure how he managed to get it all off of him, well most of it anyway.
Then we made our way to Lab 2 for academics where we learned about a variety of marine mammals, reptiles, and birds from Blue Whales to Sea Otters and Salt Water Crocodiles. Once we finished, everyone stayed in the cool lab playing card games until dinner. After dinner we made our way back to lab 2 for a quiet journal time. We made our way to the snack bar after a quick blackout. On our way back we realized the sky. It was crystal clear; we were able to see every star in our area,
IDing constellations and taking a couple minutes to rest on the tennis courts staring at the night sky. It makes me wish that the sky’s back home were like that. There is no sky like the one here. Anyway that’s all for now. I guess I’m signing off for now. Goodnight.
