Holy Coconuts!

After a good night’s sleep at our new location in Bocas del Toro, we woke up to a pancake breakfast. Lily was so excited about the pancakes that she went back for seconds. After breakfast we took our midterm and had lecture. At lecture Grace was excited to learn about a research center in Madagascar that was set up for researching lemurs.

Then we ate lunch, which was stir fry. Jerry got excited about the soy sauce and applied too much. At lunch we decided on a team name, which we have been debating for a couple days. We ended up deciding between Chorutaga and Mops. Chorutaga was the name of an indigenous tribe in Costa Rica. Mops is a nickname used it Costa Rica similar to saying man. FFor example when someone says “What’s Up, man?” We decided on Mops because we didn’t want to steal someone else’s name.
Next we headed into the field where Alex F. was especially good at finding the fruit on the trees and knowing what color the fruit was. Then we recorded different species of plants. I was the recorder while Grace and Rosie differentiated types of plants. It was especially difficult going into the field because there coconut trees everywhere and we had to be careful not to stand under one. Coconuts are dangerous when they fall from a 15 foot tree.

Finally, it was time to swim, my favorite time of day. Kate was excited about kayaking and was the first one to head out with Jerry to help paddle. The rest of the crew swam out to a sand bar where the squishy sand felt nice between our toes. Being in the sun was a welcome change to the rainy days we have been experiencing for the majority of our trip!

Next we showered and ate dinner. For desert we had special bread pudding. Once again Lily got excited about food and and extra bread pudding. After dinner we played a group game of KEMPS which is a card game similar to spoons.

Overall today was a full day packed with action and laughs. As the trip goes on we all bond more and more. The fun never stops!
