Canada Day!!

July 1st, 2012

Happy Canada Day!!! Shout out to my Canadian baby sis!!!

Today was a very eventful day. We definitely whipped out the teamwork and problem solving skills. The day started with a remarkable late wake up of 7:30am. We then set up our gear and began to boat over to a new dive site.

Then, without a warning the starboard (right) throttle cable exploded! (and by exploded I mean broke.), therefore we have we had no way of turning left. Amy and Bare Grillz (A.K.A. Cody) leaped into the dingy and attempted to steer the boat towards the closet mooring ball, because we were in a marine protected area and were not allowed to anchor. Amy was driving the dingy into the side of the boat to push it in the right direction while Bare Grillz pumped water out of the flooding dingy! It was live action! Then a rescue dingy from another boat arrived to help tie the boat onto a mooring. I, following the technique of a flying squirrel, leaped off the bow of the boat onto the rescue dingy to help with the procedure. The second attempt was a success and we safely managed to attach to a mooring ball with loosing any lives.
After that crazy occurrence we geared up and headed of to Manta Bay dive site while our trusting stud of a captain stayed on board to fiddle with the technical difficulties. He came up with a nifty line system rigged up to the throttle that when he pulled revved the engine. It was very impressive. Ghetto, but impressive.

The dive at Manta Bay started off with a coral reef check. We worked as a group and collected data from certain parts of the reef. We recorded things like corals, fish and other organisms that were living around a distance of 20ft at a time. Once we finished our scientific portion we were able to just swim around and enjoy the beauty of the reef. Most of us were able to see two juvenile trunkfish, and for those who don’t know what that is, it is a small black dot, the size of a pea, will little yellow dots (A.K.A. adorable).

We also did a dawn dive today. This is where we started in the water right before the sun went down so it gradually got dark as the dive went on. Towards the end of the dive Amy took us to a big sandy patch and we all took off our fins for a huge ninja battle, lets just say slow motion fighting under water is epic. Mike and I had an intense battle which included back flips and light sabers (A.K.A. flashlights). I am pretty sure it was caught on video so that will be interesting to see.

The night ended with gaining a few pounds by destroying a pan of brownies made by Marina. The day was a great one. It was eventful and fun and we always make every situation a memorable one.

Love you all!!!
Kiki
