It's unBelizable!

After an eventful first afternoon at Long Caye, we were excited to get up and have a marvelous day full of adventure. Luckily we awoke to a lovely breakfast of bacon, toast, sausages, and scrambled eggs made by Ms. Jennifer. Shortly after breakfast we took our diving equipment to the dock and had a dive briefing with our dive master, Jerome.

Since only half of the group was previously certified, the uncertified divers spent time reading their scuba textbooks and practicing awesome new skills in the water. While they were busy getting their learn on, the experienced divers explored a dive site called Rick’s Place.

As the divers approached the site many were entranced by the amazing reef and crystal clear water of Belize. Our dive master explained that we would be dropping down into a reef that was 25 feet deep, then would swim off the edge of the reef, down the wall to 60 feet, and then traverse along the wall checking out the marine life and coral the reef had to offer. We started the dive by rolling off the back of the boat and heading down into the reef. During the dive we saw lots of soft coral, tarpon fish, trigger fish, and parrot fish. This was an amazing dive and was a great way to kick off an awesome morning.

After the dive we came back to the island where hotdogs, chips, and fresh tang juice had been prepared for us. We shared stories of our morning with the whole group and then prepared for an awesome afternoon full of swimming and exploring. After lunch ended everyone headed down to the beach for a “name game” where students shared their full names and favorite dance moves. We were all eager to finish the name game as quickly as possible, so we could go on our second dive of the day. This time the uncertified divers joined us in the water at a site called Long Caye Ridge. This dive was phenomenal and we were able to see things none of us had seen before. Some highlights included chasing down a turtle, seeing a moray eel in the side of the cave, and being shocked when a spotted eagle swam by our group.

When the afternoon of scuba diving was over, the uncertified divers went back to the dinning room and completed knowledge reviews in their textbooks, getting one step closer to be full-on, real deal divers. Certified divers explored the island, played beach volleyball, and watched the beautiful sunset. The uncertified divers received a quick break before dinner when one of the locals stormed into their classroom and told them to come see the sharks outside. Once the sharks were fed and everyone stopped freaking out dinner was served. This delicious meal was topped off by wonderful stories by our two instructors Tucker and Matt. Luckily, the island cooled off, and we were all relaxed by a nice breeze. Overall, it was an amazing day and we are so thankful that everything is running smoothly.

Adios,

Collin
