Training and Certifications

Underwater Discoveries Advanced is designed to take Underwater Discoveries to the next level for participants who are at least PADI Open Water Certified. No other Caribbean teen program completes more dives or dive training in a three-week period. On Underwater Discoveries Advanced there are opportunities to do tons of diving and receive the following training and internationally recognized certifications:

PADI Advanced Open Water Diver

This essential component of dive education reinforces the PADI Safe Diving Practices and assists divers in learning to be responsible and aware in a variety of environments. Training dives include a deep dive, a navigation dive, an underwater naturalist dive and a night dive.

PADI Rescue Diver

A favorite of Broadreachers because of the role-plays and skills mastered, this is perhaps the most important scuba certification. The skills learned, including accident management, environmental evaluation, first-aid and rescue training, help students become more aware of safety and good outdoor leadership in any setting.

PADI Master Diver

This is the highest recreational diver PADI certification available.

PADI Specialty Certifications

Broadreachers perfect their skills in different dive environments by earning up to 5 certifications which can include Nitrox Diver, Night Diver, Deep Diver, Underwater Navigation, Wreck Diver, Peak Performance Buoyancy and Boat Diver.

Emergency First Responder Primary Care (CPR)

Emergency First Response Primary Care (CPR) teaches participants how to respond to life-threatening emergencies. The course focuses on primary care through a combination of knowledge development, skill development and realistic scenario practice to make sure participants have the confidence in their ability to provide care when emergency situations arise.

Emergency First Responder Secondary Care (First Aid)

Emergency First Response Secondary Care (First Aid) covers injuries or illnesses that are not immediately life threatening. Participants focus on secondary assessment and first aid through knowledge development, skill development and realistic scenario practice.

Broadreachers under the age of 15 are eligible for all of the above certifications except Deep Diver, Nitrox Diver and Wreck Diver.

International Yacht Training (IYT)

These courses teach participants important sailing basics including points of sail, knots and splices, reefing, tacking, jibing, yacht nomenclature, coastal and ocean navigation, docking, anchoring, helmsmanship, man overboard drills and GPS navigation.

IYT – Introduction to Yachting

This course is designed to introduce a beginner to the world of yachting onboard a sailboat. The course combines knowledge and practical skills and includes: yacht nomenclature, basic rope work and knots, safety briefings and equipment and short passage planning.

IYT – International Crew Certificate

This course gives a basic understanding of the knowledge and skills required to be an active crew member onboard a sailing yacht. Subjects include: points of sail, knots and splices, reefing, tacking, jibing, yacht nomenclature, coastal and ocean navigation, safety checks, docking, anchoring, helmsmanship, small boat handling, man overboard drills and GPS navigation.

IYT – Radio Operators / Communications Certificate (optional)

Every crew member needs to know how to operate a marine radio. This course covers the rules for use and operation of VHF radios, what to do in case of an emergency and an introduction to other marine communications equipment.

Marine Biology II

Broadreach emphasizes marine ecology on all our Caribbean scuba programs. As your knowledge of life underwater grows, so will your love of diving. Participants enhance their diving experiences by gaining an understanding of complex coral reef ecosystems. There are opportunities to earn PADI Underwater Naturalist, AWARE Coral Reef Conservation and AWARE Fish Identification Specialty certifications.

Water Sports

There is plenty of time on any Broadreach Caribbean program for instruction in water sports including waterskiing, wake boarding, knee boarding, small boat handling and laser sailing.

Diver Brett was very proud of his accomplishments in diving and sailing, having had no diving experience and minimal sailing. He felt his instructor was well informed, patient, and encouraging. Thanks to your entire staff for making this a safe, positive experience for Brett. — Annie Schwager, Bainbridge Island, WA
