Dominica Sea Turtle Studies

Dominica is an untouched tropical paradise of rainforest, pristine reefs and a bubbling ‘Boiling Lake.’ In other words, the ultimate lab for a sea turtle field study.

Put your passion for marine science to good use during this hands-on exploration of sea turtle biology. As part of a team of student researchers, you’ll partner with a local organization dedicated to sea turtle conservation. Stroll volcanic black sand beaches, counting eggs, looking for hatchlings, marking nests and tagging turtles for further study. Observe nesting behavior and assist biologists with excavation. Work with turtles in natural habitats, measuring carapace and collecting data on local turtle populations, including Leatherbacks, Hawksbill and Green Turtles. Dominica has a long history of promoting conservation and your participation in this expedition will further important environmental causes.

Outside of turtle encounters, we seek many more adventures. Hike through the cloud forest to a rare Boiling Lake in Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Swim under waterfalls in Dominica’s famed Emerald Pool. Snorkel Champagne Reef and marvel at colorful sea life while swimming above geothermal activity. We even take an opportunity to make chocolate, seeing how the island’s most popular resource travels from bean to bar. After three life-changing weeks, you’ll leave Dominica with valuable field research experience, a deeper connection to nature and a real-world exposure to the important fields of marine biology, environmental science and conservation.
