Mexico Oaxaca Spanish Immersion

Beginning ceramics

Map

Oaxaca is the most diverse and flavorful state in all of Mexico. Located in the Southern, Pacific coast part of the country between Chiapas and Guerrero, Oaxaca has it all: beaches, mountains, charming colonial cities, and the indigenous Mixtecs and Zapotecs people. While the streets of Oaxaca City may be lined with temples, the real temples are in the kitchens of world-class chefs and ordinary Oaxaqueños. Here, the seven-flavor mole definitely lives up to its name.

Before we settle into Oaxaca City for our immersion experience. Before we attend local baseball games, watch the weavers in Teotitlán del Valle or visit towering Monte Alban, we head to the mountains. Mexico’s Sierra Norte range is home to the world’s richest and most varied pine-oak forests, an abundance of plant and animal life, and miles and miles of hiking trails. Walk through the clouds and take it all in. Follow a path. Or better yet, create new ones.

“I thought I could never live away from my family for three weeks. Not only did I do so, I had the time of my life.” — Hannah Pierce-Hoffman, Swarthmore, PA

For the final leg of the journey we head to the Pimpollo orphanage in Juchitán de Zaragoza. This area is an indigenous Zapotecs town situated just west of the Istmo de Tehuantepec region. It’s the place to discover grand palaces, colorful markets and experience fulfillment — the ultimate souvenir.
