Introduction to Photography
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is an introduction to digital photography, digital editing and production, and the art of taking pictures. During the initial phase of the course students will learn the fundamentals of camera operation, manipulation of camera settings, and composition techniques. By the end of the course, students will be expected to produce a professional portfolio of high-quality images that demonstrate creative advancement and an understanding of composition and basic photo editing.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
- By the end of the course, each student should have an informed understanding of the following:
- A basic history of photography
- The ethics of picture taking and safe travel habits
- Technical aspects of how to operate a digital still camera
- Exposure, f-stop and depth of field, shutter speed, white-balance
- Composition, lighting, and exposure techniques
- Evaluation of photographs based on professional standards
- Production of high-quality photographs using digital imaging software
- Transferring images, different file types, and archiving
- Digital manipulation using levels, curves, cropping, and spot fixing
- The ethics of digital editing and creative techniques
