France Language Immersion 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

A twenty-six day French immersion course designed so students with varying levels of French proficiency will improve their level of comprehension and speaking in addition to gaining an exposure and appreciation of French culture. To complement formal language instruction, students will experience various aspects of France by exploring the museums and attractions of Paris, hiking Mont Blanc near Chamonix, living in a home stay while attending language school in Amboise, completing an oral history project, and participating in community service work.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • The main objective of course is for students to improve their French listening, reading, writing and speaking skills through formal and experiential learning.
  • The course is designed for students with varying levels of French language experience and proficiency; the specific objectives for each language level are different.
  • Formal language instruction will develop elements of the French language, such as grammatical structures, verb use and tenses, vocabulary, expression and cultural aspects of communication.
  • Grammar, vocabulary and cultural topics will be covered through written and oral assignments and discussions.
  • Exposure to French culture and the history of France will be developed through discussions, workshops, lectures, home stays and cultural exchange activities.
  • Social interaction in French and use of the language for completion of daily tasks will be fostered during the student’s home stays.

LECTURE TOPICS

  • This course is designed for students with varying degrees of French language experience.
  • At the beginning of the formal language instruction, the students will be tested on their French proficiency and will be placed into the appropriate level out of the six levels offered: Elementary French 1 & 2; Intermediate French 1 & 2; Advanced French 1 & 2.

FIELD STUDIES & EXERCISES

  • Museum visits to explore French art, culture and history
  • Excursions to local places of interest, such as museums, châteaux and gardens
  • French cuisine and regional products tasting
  • French film viewing and discussion
  • Completion of an Oral History project, detailing the life history of a member of the student’s homestay family
  • Mont Blanc hiking excursion, including history and ecology of the region
