This Be a A Test!, by Billy Bob M
You may have thought you’d seen it all, but this morning you know better.
The Boston Red Sox completed a historic collapse Wednesday night in Baltimore, suffering a 4-3 loss to miss out on the playoffs.
Boston’s September slide was slow and protracted, but the fatal blow came with stunning swiftness.
With his club clinging to a 3-2 lead, Sox closer Jonathan Paplebon quickly notched the first two outs in the ninth. But the next three batters collected hits - producing two runs to give the lowly Orioles a dramatic late-night win.
Shortly after that wild finish, Evan Longoria clubbed a solo homer in the bottom of the 12th to help Tampa Bay comeback from a seven-run deficit and beat the New York Yankees. Boston and Tampa entered the night, the last of the regular season, tied for the wild card.
In the National League, the St. Louis Cardinals got a shutout effort from New Hampshire native Chris Carpenter, coupled with an Atlanta Braves’ extra-inning loss to Philadelphia, to seal the National Legue wild card berth.
So, the playoffs line up like this:
American League: Tigers at Yankees and Rays at Rangers on Friday.
National League: Cardinals at Phillies and Diamondbacks at Brewers on Saturday.
